Prada, the prominent Italian luxury brand, has successfully closed a €1.3 billion ($1.51 billion) deal to acquire Versace, a well-regarded competitor in the fashion industry. This significant acquisition extends Prada’s luxury market reach beyond its established lines, including Miu Miu.
Discussions regarding this acquisition began as far back as the COVID-19 pandemic. Prada’s interest gained momentum after a previous agreement for Capri Holdings to sell Versace to Tapestry fell through due to regulatory issues. Lorenzo Bertelli, heir to the Prada legacy, has played an instrumental role in the acquisition and will take on the position of executive chairman of Versace after the transition.
Established in 1978 by Gianni Versace, the brand is celebrated for its daring and luxurious designs, making it a standout in the global fashion scene. With this acquisition, Prada now adds Versace to its portfolio, which is characterized by tradition, luxury, and opportunities for growth.
This move comes on the heels of Donatella Versace's departure as creative director after three decades. Dario Vitale, who was previously design director at Miu Miu, assumes the creative helm at Versace, marking the beginning of a new era for the label.
Experts in the fashion industry assert that this acquisition not only bolsters Prada’s position in the luxury market but also enriches its portfolio amid fierce competition. By integrating Versace’s distinctive aesthetic with Prada’s strategic approach, the company aims to elevate brand visibility and global impact.
