In a devastating incident in southeastern Oaxaca, Mexico, at least 13 people have lost their lives and approximately 100 have sustained injuries following the derailment of a passenger train. This tragic event unfolded on the Interoceanic train route, which connects the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific coast. At the time of the accident, the train was carrying a total of 241 passengers along with nine crew members.
The Mexican Navy, responsible for the nation’s railway operations, confirmed that out of the injured, 98 individuals needed medical attention, with 36 remaining hospitalized. The train derailed as it navigated a sharp curve close to Nizanda. An official inquiry led by Mexico’s Attorney General has been initiated to ascertain the reasons behind this catastrophic event.
President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico expressed her deep concern regarding the accident, noting that five of those injured are in critical condition. She indicated that high-ranking officials, including the Secretary of the Navy, are en route to the site to supervise the rescue and recovery efforts currently underway.
Images and footage from the scene reveal rescue personnel assisting passengers as they safely evacuate from the train, which was found tilted adjacent to a cliff. The Interoceanic service involves two locomotives and four passenger cars, crucial for connecting Salina Cruz on the Pacific with Coatzacoalcos on the Gulf Coast, supporting both passenger and cargo transport.
Governor Salomón Jara Cruz of Oaxaca shared a heartfelt statement expressing his “deep regret” over the unfortunate event, affirming that local and federal authorities are collaborating to assist the victims and their families through this challenging time.
The Interoceanic train line, inaugurated only two years ago, forms part of a significant governmental project aimed at economic revitalization and infrastructure improvements in southern Mexico. This initiative seeks to enhance transport across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, establishing a strategic corridor for trade that encompasses the expansion of ports, railroads, and industrial establishments.
This rail corridor represents an essential aspect of the Mexican government’s strategy to promote economic growth in the region by improving connections between the Pacific and Atlantic sides. Despite the harrowing events of today, officials are steadfast in their commitment to the ongoing development and modernization of this vital transport route, ensuring support to the affected individuals while investigating the factors that contributed to the derailment.
