Violent Protest in Bangladesh: Journalists Rescued from Burning Offices

Post by : Raina Nasser

On December 19, 2025, a violent protest erupted in Bangladesh, leading to a fierce attack on newspaper offices in the capital.

The unrest commenced following the death of 32-year-old youth leader, Sharif Osman Hadi, prompting angry supporters to gather en masse for a protest that escalated into chaos.

Destruction of Newspaper Offices

Late that night, the protesters reached a prominent Bengali newspaper's office, where they inflicted damage before igniting a fire around midnight.

The crowd subsequently directed their anger toward another major newspaper located in Karwan Bazar, with a warning call alerting the journalists inside that violence was imminent.

As staff attempted to escape, the protesters breached the building, destroying parts of the ground and first floors before igniting it.

Journalists Held Captive

Those working the night shift found themselves trapped within the burning structure, as dense smoke rapidly filled the environment.

A journalist shared her panic online, struggling to breathe and urgently calling for assistance as she feared for her life.

As a desperate measure, the journalists ascended to the rooftop, awaiting rescue amid the raging fire below.

Prolonged Rescue Effort

Firefighters succeeded in controlling the blaze by 2 am, but outside, the rioting crowd thwarted rescue attempts.

After nearly four hours, security personnel and firefighters successfully evacuated approximately 25 to 30 journalists to safety.

One journalist later confirmed the safe evacuation and expressed gratitude towards the rescue teams for their heroic efforts.

This successful operation averted a potential catastrophe and preserved numerous lives.

Military Presence Ensures Safety

In the aftermath, military forces were deployed to oversee the site of the damaged building and deter further violence.

Amid the upheaval, a senior editor faced assault from the mob, with videos capturing the distressing scene of him being attacked.

Ongoing Investigation into Motives

The reasons behind the targeting of these newspaper offices remain ambiguous. Both outlets had a reputation for calm and impartial reporting, and authorities are set to investigate.

The incident raises significant concerns regarding the safety of journalists in Bangladesh, leaving many shaken as they continue to risk their lives for the truth.
