Heat Crisis in Bhopal's Hamidia Burn Ward Due to AC Malfunctions

Post by : Shakul

Alarming reports have emerged from Hamidia Hospital in Bhopal, where burn patients are facing dire conditions amid high temperatures due to non-functioning air conditioning systems in critical areas. This situation raises significant concerns regarding safety and infrastructure at one of Madhya Pradesh’s largest government healthcare facilities.

Admitted patients, including those with severe burns covering nearly 90% of their bodies, are reportedly enduring intolerable heat. Families have been compelled to bring in coolers, ice packs, and manual fans to offer some relief while the summer heat intensifies.

The crisis is not limited to the wards, as air-conditioning units in the Burn Intensive Care Unit and Operating Theatre have been out of service for several months. This has forced medical procedures to be performed under suboptimal conditions, raising concerns over infection prevention and recovery rates for seriously injured patients.

Experts in the medical field point out that maintaining an appropriate temperature is crucial for burn treatment. Patients with severe skin damage are particularly susceptible to infections due to a compromised natural barrier. Controlled environments with filtered air and stable temperatures are vital to minimizing complications and enhancing survival chances.

Official records indicate that hospital admins have repeatedly notified various departments about these malfunctioning systems. Correspondence dating back to 2025 has highlighted the urgent need for repairs and operational air-conditioning units. However, despite numerous reminders, necessary actions have not yet been implemented.

Hospital officials attribute the lag in restoration to administrative and technical delays involving several departments. While funding for electrical repairs is reported to have been approved, coordination issues between involved entities are hampering the necessary progress.

This situation has drawn criticism from both family members of patients and healthcare advocates who insist that essential medical facilities should never be allowed to remain non-operational in a specialized burn treatment environment. Authorities are now under mounting pressure to rectify the situation promptly and ensure patient safety in critical care environments.
