A staggering number of over 500,000 individuals in Cambodia have been compelled to evacuate their homes amid relentless conflict at the Thailand border. The clash has persisted for nearly 14 days, wreaking havoc on communities and lives on both sides of the border.
According to Cambodia’s interior ministry, approximately 518,000 people are enduring significant hardships as they are forced out of their residences and academic institutions. Many families are urgently relocating to safer zones to avoid the shelling and aerial assaults occurring near the border.
The combat has resulted in devastating casualties. Reports indicate that 22 individuals have lost their lives in Thailand, while 19 fatalities have been recorded in Cambodia. Heavy armaments, including tanks, drones, and artillery, have been deployed in these confrontations.
The ongoing conflict is rooted in a long-standing border disagreement between the two nations. The Cambodia-Thailand border stretches over 800 kilometers, with divisions established during colonial rule. This geographical area also hosts ancient temple ruins, which historically have heightened tensions.
A regional summit is scheduled for Monday in Malaysia, with foreign ministers from Southeast Asian nations expected to participate. The meeting aims to alleviate tensions and restore peace in the region.
Thailand emphasized that this summit presents a crucial opportunity for progress, yet reiterated its requirement for Cambodia to declare a ceasefire and assist in landmine clearance operations along the border.
Meanwhile, Cambodia expressed its dedication to resolving all disputes through dialogue and diplomacy, striving to mend relations with Thailand.
The conflict has similarly forced a significant number of Thai residents into displacement, with approximately 400,000 seeking refuge. Thai officials report that over 200,000 individuals remain in shelters. Although some villagers have returned to their homes, authorities warn of potential landmines and unexploded ordnance in the area.
Accusations have flown between both nations regarding responsibility for igniting the conflict. Earlier clashes in July resulted in numerous deaths before a tentative ceasefire was announced, which unfortunately failed to hold.
Violence surged again on December 7, leading to ongoing confrontations almost daily. Recent skirmishes were recorded close to the historic Preah Vihear temple, which has experienced prior violence.
A judicial decision made in 2013 had addressed previous disputes; however, the situation deteriorated once more in May of this year following a border incident that led to the death of a Cambodian soldier.
The conflict between Cambodia and Thailand has left thousands of families in disarray, with children unable to attend school and daily life near the border severely disrupted.
