Thailand and Cambodia Move Forward in Border Negotiations Ahead of ASEAN Summit

Post by : Raina Nasser

Thailand and Cambodia have made notable progress in settling their protracted border dispute following a significant two-day meeting of the Joint Commission on demarcation held in Chanthaburi, Thailand. The recent talks concentrated on technical collaboration, the replacement of boundary markers, and expediting land surveys. Both nations underscored the importance of peaceful dialogue and mutual respect, demonstrating their dedication to mitigating long-standing tensions along their 800-kilometer border. These discussions occur in tandem with the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, where Thailand and Cambodia are anticipated to finalize a formal agreement concerning border resolution.

At the Chanthaburi meeting, both countries consented to replace 15 boundary pillars at jointly determined sites and specifications. They also discussed submerged markers, establishing new locations based on mutual agreement. Additionally, the updated Terms of Reference from 2003 will integrate advanced LiDAR technology to produce precise orthophoto maps. Through these initiatives, Thailand and Cambodia aim to expedite land demarcation, diminish misunderstandings, and cultivate bilateral trust. Their collaborative efforts showcase how technical cooperation can peacefully resolve even chronic territorial challenges.

The discussions extended to sensitive areas between Boundary Pillars No. 42 to 47, which includes villages such as Chouk Chey-Nong Chan and Prey Chan-Nong Ya Kaeo. Technical instructions for surveys and temporary marker placements were jointly concluded. The meetings also addressed Thai concerns regarding Cambodian nationals encroaching into Thai territory in specific districts. Thailand and Cambodia are committed to ensuring that all forthcoming activities respect historical claims while preventing incidents that may escalate tensions. Their cooperative efforts are being closely observed by ASEAN, reflecting regional backing for this peaceful resolution.

The agreement from Chanthaburi signifies Thailand and Cambodia’s resolve to keep the border dispute from adversely impacting civilians or regional stability. Over the years, the countries have experienced conflicts, including skirmishes in 2011 and July 2025, leading to casualties and displacements. Currently, Thailand and Cambodia prioritize dialogue and technical remedies rather than military engagements. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasized the amicable nature of the meetings, while Thailand's Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow reassured that the nations are nearing the signing of a Declaration of Thailand-Cambodia Relations at the ASEAN Summit.

The next Joint Border Commission meeting is slated to take place in Siem Reap in January 2026. This ongoing collaboration highlights a larger trend among ASEAN nations towards resolving disputes through diplomatic means. With a turbulent history behind them, Thailand and Cambodia are cautiously advancing towards fostering enduring trust, enhancing border security, and alleviating further civilian distress. Their concerted efforts illustrate that continuous dialogue, technical skill, and goodwill can effectively address even the most complex territorial conflicts.
