In a groundbreaking medical feat, Abu Dhabi has successfully separated 15-month-old Nigerian twins, marking a significant achievement in pediatric surgery. Conducted at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC), part of PureHealth’s SEHA network, this operation solidifies the UAE's standing as a leader in healthcare innovation.
Twins Mercy and Goodness were born in Nigeria conjoined at the skull, a rare condition known as craniopagus twinning which presents immense surgical challenges. Their path to recovery spanned over six months and entailed four intricate surgeries.
A multi-national team of over 60 medical professionals from the UAE, UK, Brazil, and Nigeria joined forces in this endeavor. The diverse group included neurosurgeons, craniofacial surgeons, pediatricians, and rehabilitation specialists, all working collaboratively.
Utilizing state-of-the-art medical technologies such as advanced imaging, augmented reality simulations, and artificial intelligence, the surgeons accurately planned the intricate procedure by mapping the delicate brain structures and vascular systems of the twins.
Gemini Untwined, renowned for its focus on craniopagus twins, was instrumental in coordinating the medical expertise and logistical support for the surgeries.
Post-surgery, the twins had their skulls reconstructed with specially designed 3D-printed titanium implants. They are currently in the UAE receiving rehabilitation to foster their independence before their anticipated return to Nigeria.
Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, reflected on the surgery as a testament to compassion and global collaboration in healthcare. She emphasized that this success epitomizes Abu Dhabi’s dedication to delivering transformative healthcare through cutting-edge technology.
Mansoor Ibrahim Al Mansoori, Chairman of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, highlighted the achievement as a validation of the emirate’s advanced healthcare capabilities and a reaffirmation of its role as a premier destination for specialized medical services.
Farhan Malik, Managing Director of PureHealth Group, expressed that the operation exemplifies their commitment to accessible healthcare and praised the dedication of the medical teams involved.
Led by Professor Noor Ul Owase Jeelani of Gemini Untwined, the surgical team utilized innovative techniques, including AI-enhanced planning and gravity-assisted brain protection, to ensure optimal results. The successful separation of Mercy and Goodness is celebrated as the fastest recorded separation of vertically conjoined twins.
This remarkable journey not only represents a personal triumph for the twins but also underscores Abu Dhabi’s evolving role as a hub for advanced medical practices and humanitarian efforts in the global healthcare landscape.
