Turkey to Align with Saudi-Pakistan Security Pact Resembling NATO Framework

Post by : Mina Rahman

Turkey is currently in negotiations to become a member of a security alliance formed by Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, mirroring NATO’s collective defense framework. This prospective agreement includes a provision akin to NATO’s Article 5, indicating that an assault on one nation would be deemed an assault on all involved.

Initially established between Riyadh and Islamabad, this pact has seen significant progress with Turkey's potential inclusion. Financial backing is anticipated from Saudi Arabia, while Pakistan would provide its nuclear capabilities, missile technology, and military personnel, with Turkey contributing its defense industry advancements and military know-how, as stated by a Turkish think tank strategist.

In light of the U.S. prioritizing its own and Israel's interests, nations such as Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan are forging stronger alliances to delineate friends from foes more clearly.

Analysts suggest that Turkey’s growing geopolitical ambitions in South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa are well-aligned with the strategic interests of both Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, making this expanded coalition a logical development.

Recently, the three nations have engaged in intensified collaboration, including their inaugural joint naval exercise held in Ankara.

Turkey’s involvement is particularly significant, as it is a central NATO member with the second-largest military force in the alliance, following the United States.

Both Saudi Arabia and Turkey are wary of Shiite-majority Iran but tend to favor dialogue over conflict. They also advocate for a Sunni-led stable Syria and the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Ukraine and Pakistan have longstanding military relations, including the construction of warships for Pakistan’s navy, enhancements to Pakistan’s F-16s, and technology sharing for drones with both Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Furthermore, Turkey has invited both nations to participate in its fifth-generation fighter jet initiative.

These trilateral defense discussions follow a recent ceasefire that brought an end to a brief military confrontation between India and Pakistan, during which Turkey openly supported Pakistan.
