Debate in Singapore Parliament on Opposition Leader Pritam Singh's Potential Dismissal

Post by : Mina Rahman

This Wednesday, Singapore’s Parliament will engage in discussions concerning the possible removal of Pritam Singh from his position as Leader of the Opposition, following his conviction for presenting false testimony to Parliament. Indranee Rajah, the Leader of the House and member of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP), initiated this motion, citing Singh’s conduct as “dishonourable and unbecoming”.

At 49, Singh made history as the first official Leader of the Opposition in Singapore since its independence in 1965. He took up the role post the 2020 elections, during which the Workers' Party secured five seats, increasing their parliamentary tally to ten. In the 2025 elections, the PAP continued its longstanding dominance by winning 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats, with the Workers' Party acquiring the remaining ones.

The essential controversy arises from a 2024 court decision that found Singh guilty of two counts of lying to Parliament, connected to false declarations made in 2021 regarding a fellow party member, Raeesah Khan, who also confessed to her own parliamentary falsehoods. Despite being fined, Singh maintained his parliamentary position and was not disqualified from running in the 2025 elections, with his appeal rejected in December.

Rajah stressed the seriousness of Singh’s actions, mentioning that lying under oath is a substantial offense, and underlining Singapore's need for leaders with unwavering integrity. She also mentioned that the behavior of other Workers' Party leaders, such as chair Sylvia Lim and vice-chair Faisal Manap, would be reviewed in light of Singh’s situation, possibly leading to further consequences.

The impending parliamentary debate intends to assess an appropriate reaction to Singh’s conviction and conduct, highlighting Singapore’s resolve to uphold accountability and honesty in public office.
