Today marked the beginning of a significant 4-day workshop titled "International Labour Standards: Building Local Policies and Capacities" in Muscat, Oman. Jointly organized by the Ministry of Labour and the International Labour Organization (ILO), the event has gathered experts, government officials, and private sector representatives from Oman and its neighboring countries. The opening ceremony was presided over by Dr. Mahad Said Ba’owain, the Minister of Labour.
The workshop's primary objective is to assist Oman and the broader region in aligning their labour laws with globally accepted standards. It also focuses on equipping officials with the skills to formulate effective labour policies while clarifying the roles of government, employers, and employees. The ultimate goal is to enhance workplace conditions and safeguard worker interests.
Khalid Salim Al Ghammari, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Labour, emphasized the rapid changes in job markets and said that adhering to international labour standards allows governments to balance economic development with worker rights and safe employment environments.
Gilbert Houngbo, the ILO's Director-General, noted that this program is a pioneering initiative in the region. He pointed out that these standards, established since 1919, play a crucial role in promoting social justice, safe working conditions, and economic development. He highlighted that collaboration and compliance with these standards are essential in combating forced labor and enhancing worker safety.
Faisal Abdullah Al Rowas, Chairman of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry, stated that the workshop is a stepping stone in refining Oman’s labour laws and fostering collaboration among government, employers, and employees. Nabhan Ahmed Al Battashi, Chairman of the General Federation of Oman Workers, affirmed that Oman is in the process of revising its work policies to conform to global frameworks.
The workshop features training sessions, presentations, and discussions aimed at developing policies that align with international norms, enhancing labour market governance, and promoting social dialogue for fairness. Participants also shared insights from other nations regarding occupational safety and health. They believe that the knowledge gained from this workshop will contribute significantly to creating safer work environments, bolstering economic growth, and fulfilling the objectives of Oman Vision 2040.
