Manchester United has once again turned to its past as it tries to steady a season that has gone badly off track. The club has appointed former midfielder Michael Carrick as head coach until the end of the current campaign, following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim. The decision reflects both urgency and caution, as United looks for short-term stability while searching for a long-term solution.
Carrick is no stranger to Old Trafford. During his playing career, he won five Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, and several other major honors. He was known for his calm style, sharp passing, and deep understanding of the game. After retiring, he stayed at the club as a coach and briefly took charge in 2021, guiding the team through three matches without defeat.
This time, the challenge is much greater. United is struggling for consistency and confidence. The team sits outside the top places in the Premier League and has already exited key cup competitions. Fans are growing restless, and expectations remain high for a club with such a rich history. Carrick has been asked to lift performances, restore belief, and keep hopes alive for Champions League qualification.
His managerial experience comes mainly from his spell at Middlesbrough, where he worked from 2022 to 2025. While he showed promise, he was unable to secure promotion to the Premier League. Even so, United believes his knowledge of the club, combined with his steady approach, makes him the right person to guide the team during this difficult period.
Carrick’s early tests will be severe. His first matches include a home game against Manchester City and an away trip to Arsenal. These fixtures will quickly show how well he can organize the team and handle pressure. Former England assistant Steve Holland will support him as part of the coaching staff, adding experience to the setup.
The club has avoided calling Carrick an interim coach, which leaves the door open if results improve. United has gone through many managers since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, and none have been able to restore long-term dominance. This appointment is another attempt to rebuild trust between the team and its supporters.
Carrick has spoken with confidence, saying he believes in the quality of the players and their ability to meet the club’s standards. His message is clear: the season is not over, and there is still much to fight for. Whether he can turn belief into results will decide how this chapter is remembered.
