Wataru Endo Faces Race Against Time Ahead of World Cup Opener for Japan

Post by : Shakul

Japan's captain, Wataru Endo, is engaged in a race against time to be fit for the team's opening match at the FIFA World Cup 2026 against the Netherlands. The accomplished midfielder is grappling with a persistent foot injury that has curtailed his training and cast doubt on his readiness for this pivotal Group F encounter.

Endo, who plays for Liverpool, has yet to engage in full training during Japan's preparations in Mexico. However, upon reaching their World Cup base in Nashville, he managed to participate in light running and passing activities with teammates, providing a sliver of optimism for the Japanese squad.

Despite this uncertainty, head coach Hajime Moriyasu holds a positive outlook regarding his captain's fitness. Medical evaluations have yet to exclude Endo from participation, and the coaching staff is closely monitoring his recovery as the opening match in Dallas approaches.

Endo had previously endured a significant foot injury while playing for Liverpool against Sunderland in February, which prematurely concluded his club season. Although he returned for Japan's recent friendly win over Iceland, he experienced discomfort, needing to be substituted at halftime, indicating that recovery is still in progress.

Moriyasu highlighted that squad replacements could be an option should Endo be unable to play. He emphasized that the situation is under careful scrutiny, especially as several squad members are still recuperating from injuries and require ongoing medical assessments prior to the tournament.

Japan approaches the World Cup with significant aspirations, facing a tough Group F that features the Netherlands, Sweden, and Tunisia. The potential absence of Endo, a key player known for his leadership and defensive prowess, could prove to be a major blow for the Samurai Blue.

Injuries have already affected the team’s roster ahead of the tournament, with Brighton's Kaoru Mitoma out due to a hamstring injury, and Monaco’s Takumi Minamino being sidelined with a long-term knee issue. As preparations progress, Japanese supporters are hopeful for Endo's swift recovery to lead the team during their World Cup debut.
