Vietnam's 0% Registration Fee for EVs Extended to 2030

Post by : Shakul

In a significant development, Vietnam has opted to prolong its 0% initial registration fee for battery-operated electric vehicles until December 31, 2030. This initiative is designed to expedite the nation’s shift towards sustainable transportation while simultaneously tackling environmental issues.

The initiative was formalized via Government Decree 202/2026/ND-CP, enacted on June 8, 2026. This decree revises existing vehicle registration policies and sustains the favorable conditions for electric vehicles, allowing purchasers to register without incurring the initial registration costs.

Officials emphasize that this extension aligns with a broader vision to entice consumers to transition from conventional gasoline-powered vehicles to greener options. They assert the measure’s potential to diminish emissions, enhance air quality, and support Vietnam’s climate objectives.

The government noted that incentives introduced in 2022 yielded favorable effects, sparking consumer interest in electric vehicles, motivating manufacturers to boost production, and aiding the growth of the local electric mobility sector.

The Ministry of Finance highlighted the swift growth of the global electric vehicle market, with international sales exceeding 17 million units in 2024 and projections suggesting more than 20 million units by 2025, indicating a shift towards sustainable transport solutions.

Furthermore, officials underlined the necessity of alleviating financial hurdles for consumers. Registration fee waivers and tax incentives are becoming commonplace globally in efforts to bolster electric vehicle adoption and facilitate charging infrastructure development.

The new decree is anticipated to instill long-term assurance among consumers, manufacturers, and investors, furthering Vietnam's green transportation mission. Authorities believe this extension is crucial for propelling the nation’s journey towards cleaner mobility and realizing sustainable economic aspirations.
