The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will ban the import, production, and sale of all single-use plastic products starting from January 1, 2026.
This big step was announced by Dr Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, the Minister of Climate Change and Environment, on World Environment Day, which was observed on Thursday, June 5.
Earlier, in 2024, some plastic products like plastic bags, straws, stirrers, and foam containers were already banned in places like Dubai. A 25 fils charge was also added to other plastic items to reduce their use.
But from 2026, the ban will become stronger and include more items like plastic cups, lids, spoons, forks, food containers, and plates.
Dr Amna said this new rule shows how serious the UAE is about taking care of nature. The goal is to stop waste and pollution that harms our land, sea, and health.
She also talked about the Clean Rivers initiative by Erth Zayed Philanthropies, which helps keep rivers clean by reducing plastic waste and encouraging people to come up with smart and green solutions.
She explained that the government wants to promote recycling and use better, eco-friendly packaging. She also stressed that everyone must take part, from big industries to regular families.
Dr Amna asked people to use less plastic in daily life. “We all have a role to play,” she said. “Let’s protect the land and the sea for ourselves, our families, and the future.”
She ended her message with a strong reminder. The theme for this year is "Beat Plastic Pollution" — a global call for action. “If we work together, we can build a greener, cleaner, and brighter future,” she said.
