Thailand has ramped up its regulations surrounding social media advertising in a bid to combat online fraud and tech-related offenses. The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DE) has confirmed that regulations introduced by the Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA) will necessitate identity verification for advertisers on major social media networks before they can publish any advertisements.
This clarification follows significant online discourse surrounding rumors that advertisers would be required to undergo facial scanning and identity validation. The ministry affirmed that these measures are part of the government's comprehensive strategy to thwart scammers from exploiting digital platforms to mislead the public.
These regulations were officially published in the Royal Gazette on May 5, 2026, as part of the Electronic Transactions Commission's initiatives aimed at preventing technology-related offenses. They are applicable to widely-used social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and others operating within Thailand.
Per the new guidelines, advertisers must authenticate their identities using official documents such as national ID cards, passports, or corporate registration papers. In addition, verified digital identity solutions that meet required standards may be employed to confirm the legitimacy of advertisers prior to any advertisement being shown to users.
Moreover, the regulations impose obligations on social media platforms themselves. Providers are mandated to gather and store advertiser information and contact details for verification. This data must be held for a minimum of 90 days post-campaign, enabling authorities to dive into any fraudulent activities if needed.
Officials are optimistic that this new measure will markedly enhance online safety by minimizing the chances of scammers posting misleading advertisements that could deceive consumers. The policy is projected to increase transparency in digital advertising and build trust in online platforms among users and businesses alike.
The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society has also encouraged citizens to practice caution while consuming online information. Authorities noted that misinformation and fake news persist on social media, which can lead to financial loss, data breaches, and greater societal consequences. The public is urged to confirm details through reliable sources prior to sharing or acting on them.
