Jakarta Student Drives CPR Training Initiative in Schools

Post by : Shakul

In Jakarta, a 17-year-old student from the British School is spearheading an initiative to introduce cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training in schools throughout Indonesia. Russell James Young, who established the Beatkeepers Collective, aims to empower youth with lifesaving capabilities that could boost survival rates during cardiac crises.

The project was recently highlighted at the Jakarta Scholars Symposium 2026, where innovative student-led proposals aimed at creating significant social impact were showcased. Among them, Russell's initiative focused on enhancing public health and emergency readiness—topics that often receive insufficient attention in the educational curriculum.

Statistics from the Indonesian Cardiology Association (PERKI) indicate that approximately 10 out of every 100,000 individuals under 35 experience cardiac arrest in Indonesia. Each year, between 300,000 and 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrest cases are reported, with only a small number of victims receiving immediate help from bystanders before professional aid arrives.

Russell believes that raising awareness and providing practical CPR training can help close this critical gap. Through the Beatkeepers Collective, he is advocating for easy access to basic first-aid skills, encouraging students to respond decisively during emergencies.

The program emphasizes experiential learning, community involvement, and educational outreach to cultivate a culture of preparedness. By equipping youth with the knowledge to act effectively in emergencies, the initiative strives to create a generation ready to provide immediate aid when it is most essential.

Health authorities have indicated that prompt CPR can significantly enhance survival rates following cardiac arrests. Yet, a lack of public knowledge and insufficient training resources continue to impede emergency response efforts throughout Indonesia.

Russell's initiative underscores the importance of youth leadership in tackling social and health issues. As the Beatkeepers Collective extends its influence, the endeavor has the potential to motivate educational institutions, teachers, and policymakers to weave lifesaving skills into the fabric of everyday learning, fostering safer and more resilient communities nationwide.
