A catastrophic 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck southern Philippines, resulting in 37 confirmed fatalities and displacing over 20,000 residents. This incident marks one of the gravest natural disasters the nation has faced in recent years. As rescue teams worked on locating survivors believed to be trapped in the rubble on Tuesday, the situation continued to evolve.
The earthquake hit off the coast of Mindanao Island on Monday morning, sparking panic throughout numerous provinces. Residents hastily evacuated their homes, while seismic shocks led many to the streets for safety. Coastal communities braced for potential tsunami waves, although significant coastal damage was largely averted.
General Santos City, a prominent economic and fishing center in the southern Philippines, was particularly hard-hit. Many buildings collapsed, roads sustained damage, and critical infrastructure faced disruptions. Reports indicate at least 13 lives were lost in the city, while emergency crews worked diligently to assess and secure damaged structures.
Sarangani Province suffered the heaviest toll, experiencing a landslide that buried homes in the mountainous area of Glan. Officials have confirmed at least 18 deaths in this province, with rescue operations ongoing for missing inhabitants amidst efforts to clear debris.
Government reports reveal that close to 2,000 residences and over 100 public buildings have sustained damage across the affected areas. Nearly 500 injuries have been recorded, while many individuals have sought refuge in temporary shelters. Schools remain closed as engineers evaluate building safety before permitting students to return.
Transportation and public services have faced disruption due to the quake. General Santos International Airport has suspended operations, resulting in multiple flight cancellations. Residents are advised to remain cautious as strong aftershocks may further compromise already weakened structures.
In response, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has initiated a comprehensive emergency response and has dispatched senior disaster officials to manage relief efforts. International allies, including the United States, Japan, France, and New Zealand, have offered their support for recovery initiatives. Situated along the Pacific Ring of Fire, the Philippines remains one of the world’s most disaster-prone regions, grappling with frequent seismic activity, volcanic eruptions, and severe weather conditions.
