The Indian cricket governing body has indicated that it is crucial for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to engage in domestic competitions to keep fit for the national team. Although both have stepped back from Test and T20 formats, they continue their ODI commitments.
The Vijay Hazare Trophy, scheduled to commence on December 24, presents a timely opportunity before the ODI series against South Africa (December 3–9) and the fixture against New Zealand beginning January 11.
Rohit Sharma has already communicated to the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) about his likely participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, while Virat Kohli's availability remains uncertain.
In their most recent ODI encounters in Australia, Rohit made a century in the final match, while Kohli rebounded from two consecutive ducks to score an unbeaten 87.
Board sources mentioned that it’s essential for players who have reduced their international participation to play domestic cricket to sharpen their skills. Given that both Kohli and Rohit are not involved in two formats, these matches are vital for maintaining their fitness and competitive edge.
Additionally, Rohit has been training at the Sharad Pawar indoor academy in Mumbai and may also take part in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament, which begins on November 26. There’s hope that Kohli, currently residing in London, will also engage in domestic competition.
Ajit Agarkar, heading India's selection committee, underscored the significance of domestic cricket, urging players to participate whenever possible to preserve their form and readiness between international commitments.
Last season, both Kohli and Rohit played one match in the Ranji Trophy each, marking Kohli’s return to Delhi after a twelve-year hiatus and Rohit’s first game for Mumbai in a decade.
Rohit clarified that his lack of participation in domestic leagues was due to a packed international schedule since 2019. He stressed the need for cricketers to take breaks to refresh, an approach that has been acknowledged and managed by the board.
Engaging in domestic cricket now offers them a chance to regain their form and stay prepared for the upcoming ODI series without overextending their commitments.
Agarkar affirmed that despite their limited international appearances, Kohli and Rohit are not being assessed for their places in the team. Their performances in domestic matches will serve to gauge their match preparedness, but their positions for future tournaments, including the 2027 ODI World Cup, are secure.
The selection committee is committed to long-term strategies, aiming to integrate domestic performances to enhance consistency and preparedness ahead of significant series and tournaments.
As the ODI series against South Africa and New Zealand approaches, competing in domestic events like the Vijay Hazare Trophy and possibly the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament will be critical for Kohli and Rohit to sustain their form.
This strategy allows India’s senior players to remain competitive while balancing rest and readiness, ultimately shaping a robust squad for upcoming years in international cricket.
