Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) announced on Friday the appointment of former New Zealand seamer Tim Southee as the franchise’s new bowling coach for IPL 2026. This strategic move infuses valuable expertise into KKR’s coaching staff and aims to bolster their bowling attack as the season approaches.
Tim Southee stands out as one of the most accomplished fast bowlers in the world of cricket, having played in 107 Test matches, 161 ODIs, and 126 T20 Internationals for New Zealand throughout his impressive 15-year career, with a total of 776 international wickets. Known for his remarkable swing and tactical prowess, Southee also led New Zealand across multiple formats and played a pivotal role in the nation’s 2019 ICC World Cup journey and the 2021 ICC World Test Championship triumph.
Having previously played for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL seasons of 2021, 2022, and 2023, Southee's familiarity with the team dynamic and IPL culture positions him well for his new coaching role. He concluded his international career in 2025, paving the way for this transition into coaching.
Welcoming Southee aboard, KKR CEO Venky Mysore remarked on the value of his experience and leadership. “It’s a pleasure to have Tim Southee rejoin the KKR family, now as a coach. His technical skills and composed demeanor will be crucial in guiding our young bowlers and enhancing our bowling lineup ahead of IPL 2026,” he stated.
Tim Southee expressed enthusiasm about returning to KKR in this new capacity, stating, “KKR has always been like home to me, and I’m honored to step into this role. The franchise boasts a vibrant culture, dedicated fans, and an outstanding roster. I’m eager to work with the bowlers and help lead the team to triumph in IPL 2026.”
Southee’s upcoming tenure is anticipated to notably benefit both KKR’s pace and spin bowlers as he brings a wealth of international experience and mentorship capabilities that will undoubtedly fortify the team. With IPL 2026 on the horizon, KKR supporters can expect a refined bowling unit under the guidance of one of cricket's legendary fast bowlers.
The transition from player to coach marks a significant new chapter for Tim Southee. His return to KKR underscores the franchise’s commitment to building a solid team, fostering young talent, and contending for the IPL 2026 championship. Fans and players alike are eager to witness how his expertise translates into tangible success on the pitch.
