This week, Iraq faces off against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in a vital two-leg playoff, aiming for a berth in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Both teams fell short of automatic qualification, yet they hold onto the opportunity through an intercontinental playoff. The initial match will kick off in Abu Dhabi on Thursday, followed by a return leg in Basra four days later. The victor will inch closer to securing the 48th and final slot in the World Cup, set to take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Previous attempts to qualify directly have eluded both teams. Iraq recently suffered a setback against Saudi Arabia in their quest for a World Cup appearance since 1986. Similarly, the UAE’s efforts were halted by Qatar, who outperformed them in a crucial qualifying round, marking these upcoming matches as historic pivotal moments for both countries.
Guiding Iraq is their coach, Graham Arnold, an Australian known for navigating challenging playoff scenarios, including leading his nation to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Arnold's knack for inspiring teams under pressure instills hope in the Iraqi camp. He emphasized the focus and determination of his team stating, “We’re doing everything we possibly can for Iraq to make sure we qualify,” as he unveiled his squad.
Iraq’s chances have been bolstered by the return of star striker Aymen Hussein from injury, whose presence is anticipated to enhance their attacking capabilities. Despite struggles in scoring—just two goals in four qualifying matches since Arnold’s tenure—his return could be game-changing.
Defensively, Iraq has displayed improvement with clean sheets in their recent matches against Saudi Arabia and Indonesia. Arnold commended the team’s defensive organization: “Defensively we did very well; we didn’t concede a goal. The discipline and work rate were great, but we need to do better with the ball and put it in the back of the net,” he noted.
On the other hand, the UAE exhibits growth under Romanian coach Cosmin Olaroiu, who took over after Paulo Bento earlier this year. Olaroiu has invigorated the squad, achieving four goals in four matches—marginally better than Iraq’s tally while still falling short of expectations. Emphasizing attacking play and ball control, the coach seeks to enhance the team's performance.
For both nations, this playoff extends beyond mere qualification; it encapsulates a chance to reclaim national pride after decades of absent World Cup presence. Iraq last qualified in 1986, while the UAE made its last appearance in 1990. Both countries have made significant investments in football infrastructure yet find themselves yearning for consistent success on the international stage. This playoff could finally alter that narrative.
Excitement is palpable among fans, with tickets selling fast for the Basra match as supporters gear up to back their teams in this historic clash. Likewise, UAE fans are poised to witness a significant step towards revitalizing their team’s global prestige.
The playoff winner will advance to an intercontinental playoff—a single match that could lead to securing a position in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, an unprecedented event featuring a 48-team format. This new arrangement improves the possibilities for countries like Iraq and the UAE to reclaim their status in world football, elevating the stakes for this playoff.
As this crucial tie approaches, both Iraq and the UAE understand that only one can proceed. Iraq's robust defense and key player recoveries provide optimism, while the UAE’s tactical shifts and enhanced offensive play could be decisive. Regardless of the outcome, fans can expect thrilling and passionate football as both nations chase their World Cup aspirations.
