The Los Angeles Clippers are set to take on the Dallas Mavericks this Friday in an NBA Cup showdown. Both teams come into this matchup grappling with significant injury issues. The Clippers aim to break a challenging six-game losing streak, whereas the Mavericks are reeling from a disappointing 3-9 start, their worst record in the first dozen games since the 2017-18 season.
Currently, the Clippers are on a lengthy seven-game road stretch without two key players. The team confirmed on Wednesday that guard Bradley Beal will be sidelined for the entirety of the season due to a left hip fracture, significantly impacting the team's scoring capabilities.
Meanwhile, forward Kawhi Leonard is with the team but will not participate, marking his sixth consecutive game missed due to a sprained ankle and foot. The absence of both Beal and Leonard has made it exceedingly difficult for the Clippers to compete, especially defensively.
In their last outing, the Clippers were defeated 130-116 by the Denver Nuggets at home, failing to contain Nikola Jokic, who scored an outstanding 55 points and collected 12 rebounds. James Harden led the Clippers with 23 points, while Jordan Miller delivered a career-high 22 points, and Ivica Zubac added 18.
Clippers coach Tyronn Lue emphasized the need for mental recovery and improved rhythm during the upcoming road trip. He stated, “We’ve encountered rough patches in the last six games. Going out on the road, performing better, and securing wins—this journey begins with Dallas. It won't be simple.”
Dallas is not without its injuries either. The Mavericks faced off against the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday, losing 123-114 while missing Kyrie Irving (knee), Anthony Davis (calf), and Dereck Lively II (knee). These absences have critically undermined their offensive and defensive capabilities.
The situation worsened for Dallas when P.J. Washington Jr. exited the game against the Suns in the first quarter due to a left shoulder strain and is now listed as day-to-day. Coach Jason Kidd expressed contentment with how the team fought through the adversity caused by missing key players.
Klay Thompson, who joined the Mavericks last season after a successful stint with Golden State, scored a season-high 19 points off the bench. He noted the team’s ongoing struggle with injuries since his arrival and expressed a desire for the entire squad to become healthy.
Last season, the Mavericks lost three of four encounters against the Clippers. Los Angeles continues to explore new lineups amidst the injury crisis. Emerging players like Cam Christie, Kobe Brown, Kobe Sanders, and Jordan Miller are receiving increased playing time.
Coach Lue reassured that the coaching staff has faith in the young talents, remaining optimistic for their ongoing improvement. He acknowledged that the team has little room for error due to injuries but is hopeful that the effort and confidence from younger players will keep them competitive.
