In Gaza, thousands of Palestinian families displaced by conflict are grappling with critical sanitation challenges in extensive tent camps. Due to extensive infrastructure damage from ongoing violence, many families are forced to create makeshift sanitation solutions near their dwellings, resulting in significant health risks.
In displacement camps like Khan Younis, residents have taken to digging shallow holes and using makeshift seats fashioned from various materials. These facilities are typically located perilously close to living and cooking areas, leading to unpleasant odors, insect infestations, and a heightened danger of disease.
Many opt for makeshift private toilets, revealing the inadequacies of communal ones, which lack privacy and are frequently overcrowded. Women and children particularly suffer, facing challenges accessing these shared facilities at night, when safety and comfort are compromised. Overcrowding and unsanitary conditions are now tragic daily realities for these camp residents.
The situation has deteriorated further due to extensive damage to Gaza's sewage systems. Humanitarian organizations have noted that a substantial number of sewage pumping stations and wastewater management systems have been heavily impacted or destroyed, causing untreated sewage to spill into residential zones. Contaminated water and pools of sewage have now become commonplace in several camps.
Although humanitarian agencies are attempting to enhance sanitation by supplying limited resources for family latrines and hygiene stations, ongoing shortages and restrictions on reconstruction efforts are hampering support. As a result, many families are compelled to depend on their own subpar facilities.
The financial strain of even building rudimentary toilets is a heavy burden for families already facing economic distress. Supplies like pipes, cement, and sanitation equipment are costly and challenging to obtain. Consequently, many are left resorting to hazardous alternatives that offer little protection from pollution.
Aid agencies caution that this sanitation crisis is escalating into a public health emergency, particularly threatening vulnerable groups like children, pregnant women, and the elderly. With rising summer temperatures exacerbating crowded living circumstances, humanitarian organizations urgently call for increased support to enhance water, sanitation, and hygiene services in Gaza's displacement camps.
