Apple Launches Next-Gen Siri AI as Tim Cook Says Goodbye

On Monday, Apple rolled out a new version of its voice assistant, Siri AI, during the annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), marking a significant milestone in the company's AI journey. This event also held special meaning as it was Tim Cook's final WWDC before his upcoming departure as CEO later this year.

During the keynote at Apple's Cupertino headquarters, Cook was met with a standing ovation, expressing heartfelt thanks for his leadership years. He assured developers and employees that the company continues to thrive as it approaches the leadership change to John Ternus in September.

A key highlight of WWDC 2026 was the introduction of Siri AI, a revamped version of Apple's digital assistant aimed at providing personalized experiences across various devices.

According to Apple, Siri AI is designed to understand content displayed on screens, pulling information from multiple devices to deliver more insightful and relevant responses. The goal is to aid users in everyday tasks more seamlessly.

For instance, Siri AI can collect recipes from web pages and messages to curate menus for events, like a World Cup viewing party, and even send out invitations through group chats.

Another new feature, named visual intelligence, empowers Siri to recognize images and objects captured via the device’s camera, facilitating access to nutritional information or practical product queries. Users can find out if a backpack fits airline carry-on criteria or whether hiking boots can be packed into luggage.

Apple announced that Siri AI will be available both as an independent app and fully integrated throughout its software ecosystem, with a beta version anticipated later this year.

Privacy was emphasized as a core focus of Apple’s AI initiatives. Craig Federighi, head of software, articulated that the intention is to create AI tools that address real issues rather than innovating for innovation’s sake.

While not naming competitors, Federighi remarked on an industry trend where some companies prioritize creating AI features over meaningful user applications, contrasting Apple’s approach of building genuinely useful technology while safeguarding user privacy.

Apple also disclosed a collaboration with Google in powering some of the technologies behind Siri AI.

In addition to Siri AI, enhancements to Apple's AI photo-editing capabilities were unveiled, including a spatial reframing feature that allows users to modify a photo's composition post-capture, emulating camera position changes for better editing flexibility.

These announcements emerge in a climate of fierce competition within the AI landscape, with firms like Google and OpenAI launching tools that creatively blend text, images, and other media.

The launch of the standalone Siri AI app is set for later this year. However, initial availability will be limited in Europe and China due to regulatory considerations.

The conference marked an era's end under Tim Cook’s guidance, who declared his retirement in April after 15 years of leadership. Under his watch, Apple’s market value surged by over $4 trillion, largely fueled by the iPhone's success and diversification into new services.

With John Ternus stepping in as CEO in September, the introduction of Siri AI symbolizes Apple’s major stride into AI and heralds a new chapter for the company.
