In a bold declaration, US President Donald Trump has reiterated his involvement in resolving tensions between India and Pakistan. Addressing oil and gas executives at a White House meeting, he claimed that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize more than any past recipient, specifically targeting former President Barack Obama's attainment of the award without notable peace achievements.
During this conversation, Trump echoed his assertion that eight jets were downed during last May’s India-Pakistan skirmishes, without clarifying the affiliations of the aircraft. He highlighted his administration's success in ending eight protracted conflicts during his presidency, some lingering for over thirty years, and underscored his preventive measures regarding a potential clash between the two nuclear nations.
Trump referenced a meeting with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who acknowledged Trump's role in averting conflict, ultimately saving countless lives. This is the latest instance whereby Trump has taken credit for reducing hostilities between India and Pakistan, a narrative he intensified after initiating a “full and immediate” ceasefire following US intervention last May 10.
The ongoing strife traces back to early May 2025 when India implemented Operation Sindoor to dismantle terrorist networks within Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, a reaction to an assault in Pahalgam that resulted in 26 fatalities. The two nations reached an agreement to halt hostilities after several days of aerial and missile confrontations, though India contends there was no mediatory involvement from external parties.
Trump asserted that his diplomatic efforts were matchless, claiming no other leader had achieved as much in halting wars. He criticized Obama’s Nobel Prize win shortly after his inauguration in 2009, claiming it was undeserved due to a lack of impactful actions. According to Trump, true Nobel honors should acknowledge those who have successfully halted significant conflicts, promoting his belief that he has saved millions of lives.
Meanwhile, Trump recounted discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who he claimed was duly impressed by the swift resolution of two enduring conflicts that had challenged Russia for years.
Moreover, Trump mentioned Venezuelan opposition figure María Corina Machado, who dedicated her recent Nobel Peace Prize to him, sharing that she plans to visit Washington soon to show her gratitude. Trump notably commented on the possible embarrassment the Nobel Committee in Norway feels for not recognizing his contributions in the preceding year.
In a recent discourse, Trump once more affirmed his belief that he thwarted a looming war between India and Pakistan, emphasizing his crucial role in ensuring peace between the two formidable nuclear states.
