Indian cricket team ODI captain Shubman Gill has finally spoken about his exclusion from India’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026. His response was calm, respectful, and full of maturity, showing the mindset of a leader even during a difficult moment in his career.
Ahead of India’s first One Day International against New Zealand, Gill addressed the media and made it clear that he holds no resentment over the selectors’ decision. He said he respects their choice and wished the Indian team the very best for the global tournament. His words reflected acceptance rather than frustration.
Gill admitted that his recent performances in the T20 format have not been strong. The team management, focusing on balance and team combination, decided to move forward without him for the World Cup. Instead, all-rounder Axar Patel was named deputy to T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav, highlighting the selectors’ preference for flexibility and depth.
“I respect the selectors’ decision. All the best to the team for the T20 World Cup,” Gill said. He added that a player can only give his best and accept what destiny has planned. According to Gill, no one can take away what is truly meant for a player.
Despite the disappointment, Gill remains a key figure in India’s ODI plans. The upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand will see him lead the side, with experienced players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma expected to play major roles. Both veterans have been in fine form and recently scored heavily in domestic cricket, proving their continued value.
Gill’s return to the ODI setup may push Yashasvi Jaiswal out of the top order, even after Jaiswal scored his maiden ODI century in South Africa. Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer is expected to return to his preferred No. 4 position, ending several experiments in the middle order.
KL Rahul is likely to continue as a wicketkeeper-batter, keeping Rishabh Pant as a backup option in the 50-over format. The bowling unit will miss Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, who have been rested for T20 duties, leaving the responsibility to Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, and other fast bowlers.
For New Zealand, the ODI series is a chance to test new players, as several senior names are unavailable due to injuries, rest, or other commitments. Even so, the visitors remain confident and focused, sticking to their team-first approach.
Shubman Gill’s reaction to his T20 World Cup exclusion sends a strong message. Instead of blaming others, he has chosen patience, self-belief, and hard work. His calm acceptance shows that setbacks are part of sport, and true players respond by preparing for the next opportunity.
