Indiana’s march through the College Football Playoff continued in dominant fashion as the top-ranked Hoosiers crushed No. 5 Oregon 56-22 in the Peach Bowl semifinal in Atlanta. With this win, Indiana stayed unbeaten and booked a place in the national championship game, where it will face No. 10 Miami on January 19.
From the opening moments, the game showed a clear gap between the two teams. Indiana’s defense set the tone just 11 seconds into the contest when cornerback D’Angelo Ponds intercepted Oregon quarterback Dante Moore’s first pass and returned it for a touchdown. That early shock rattled Oregon and energized the Hoosiers, who never looked back.
Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza delivered another outstanding performance. The Heisman Trophy winner completed 17 of 20 passes and threw five touchdown passes. He showed calm decision-making, accuracy, and leadership, spreading the ball to multiple receivers. His connection with Elijah Sarratt proved especially dangerous, as the pair linked up for two scoring plays.
The Hoosiers’ defense was just as impressive. Indiana forced three turnovers in the first half, turning each mistake into points. Oregon struggled to move the ball, managing only nine rushing yards on 17 carries in the first half. The Ducks were also hurt by injuries, as their two top running backs were unavailable, leaving Moore with limited support.
Indiana led 35-7 at halftime, effectively ending the contest early. The defense continued to pressure Moore, forcing fumbles and limiting big plays. Daniel Ndukwe and Mario Landino were key disruptors, while the defensive line consistently controlled the game at the line of scrimmage.
The offense stayed sharp in the second half. Kaelon Black added two rushing touchdowns, showing Indiana’s balance between passing and running. Special teams also played a role, as a blocked punt set up another Mendoza touchdown pass, further extending the lead.
Oregon had brief moments of success, including a long run that led to a touchdown, but those flashes were not enough to challenge Indiana’s control. The Ducks’ mistakes, combined with Indiana’s speed and discipline, proved too much to overcome.
This victory follows Indiana’s earlier playoff win over Alabama, showing that the Hoosiers are peaking at the right time. With a perfect 15-0 record, they are now one win away from giving the Big Ten its third straight national championship.
The upcoming title game will have added meaning for Mendoza, who will play in his home state of Florida against Miami. Despite the Hurricanes having home-field advantage, Indiana’s confidence and form make them a serious threat.
Indiana’s performance against Oregon was not just a win; it was a statement. Strong defense, smart offense, and team depth have made the Hoosiers one of the most complete teams in college football this season. As they prepare for the national championship, Indiana has shown it belongs among the elite.
