Salt Typhoon Cyberattack Compromises Email Systems of US House Committees

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

According to insiders, a Chinese cybercriminal group named Salt Typhoon has infiltrated the email systems utilized by staff members from various influential committees in the US House of Representatives.

The breach specifically targeted email accounts of those working in the House China Committee, along with aides to committees focused on foreign affairs, intelligence, and armed services. The names of the impacted individuals remain confidential.

This cyber intrusion, first detected in December, leaves open the question of whether direct emails of US lawmakers were compromised.

China has rejected these claims, with an embassy spokesperson labeling them as unfounded. Meanwhile, US agencies, including the FBI, have refrained from making comments. There were no immediate reactions from the White House or relevant committee offices.

Historically, US lawmakers and their aides—particularly those in military and intelligence roles—have found themselves prime targets of foreign cyber espionage. Past incidents further illustrate the persistent weaknesses present in governmental communication frameworks.

The Salt Typhoon group has been under the scrutiny of US intelligence agencies, suspected of accumulating vast amounts of data from American telecoms and intercepting critical conversations with high-ranking US officials. China has consistently denied any engagement in such cyber operations.

Last year, the US imposed sanctions against a suspected hacker and a China-based cybersecurity firm tied to the Salt Typhoon activities.
