The tragic toll from a landfill collapse in Cebu City, Philippines, has reached four fatalities, with rescue operations ongoing for many missing workers in perilous circumstances.
This incident took place on Thursday at Cebu City’s Binaliw landfill, where a significant portion of refuse unexpectedly collapsed. Around 110 workers were reported on-site when the incident occurred, leading to the destruction of various structures under considerable weight.
Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival confirmed on Saturday that four workers have died, and at least 12 individuals sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals. Official reports indicate that 36 workers are still unaccounted for, but authorities are working to verify these numbers.
Families of missing workers congregated near the landfill, holding onto hope for the return of their loved ones. One individual searching for her husband expressed distress over the lack of information, yet she remains optimistic.
Rescue operations are complicated due to the precarious nature of the debris, including twisted metal and flammable waste materials. Personnel from police, fire services, and disaster response units are meticulously combing through the wreckage. Officials have reported discerning signs of life in select zones, leading to the mobilization of a heavy 50-ton crane under police supervision to aid the search.
In response to the risks posed to rescuers from unstable refuse and toxic gases, authorities have implemented stringent safety protocols around the site. Access to the area is now closely monitored to prevent additional incidents.
The deceased, which included an engineer and a female staff member, were confirmed to work at the landfill. Investigations are continuing to uncover the cause behind the collapse of the massive garbage heap. A survivor noted that the calamity struck suddenly without prior warning, despite normal conditions being observable at the time.
As time ticks away, teams persist with their search efforts, remaining hopeful that more survivors may yet emerge from the ruins.
